Hi everyone,
Only a few more shopping days to go. We finally have a few packages under the tree and more in the car that haven’t been brought in yet. Tonight we’ll hit it again. One of the things I like to give is a good book and I know that many of you have the same habit.
So today’s questions is about books. May I ask what you’re reading or have read lately that you would recommend? I just bought KILLING LINCOLN by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard but haven’t read it yet. And I’m rereading LIFE OF PI by Yann Martel, which I read long ago and enjoyed. In the children’s world I recently read Douglas Florian’s INSECTLOPEDIA and Joyce Sidman’s DARK EMPEROR and loved them both. I just finished reading WILD by Cheryl Strayed and had mixed feelings about it. Every now and then I return to Billy Collins’s HOROSCOPES FOR THE DEAD, a favorite, and last night I picked up THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY, and enjoyed another dozen or so poems in the delightful collection assembled by Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell. I’m currently reading MIND OF THE RAVEN, by Bernd Heinrich because I’m into crows and ravens. I certainly recommend Jill Corcoran’s anthology of poems about people who have made a difference. It’s called DARE TO DREAM . . . CHANGE THE WORLD. And don’t forget the collection of sports poems by poets all over the world. It’s called AND THE CROWD GOES WILD! and was edited by Carol-Ann Hoyt and Heidi Bee Roemer. Another excellent read is AMERICA – THE OWNER’S MANUAL: HOW YOUR COUNTRY REALLY WORKS AND HOW TO KEEP IT RUNNING, by Harvey Asher and Sandy Asher.
What about you? Anything you would recommend to be added to someone’s gift list? Let’s hear from you.
David
marvelous list…some of these will full the “Something to Read” on our list.
Hi, Annalisa,
So many books, so little time. And others keep coming out!
Good books, David-some I have, some I’ll certainly look for. I have bought several copies of Jeannine Atkins book of poetry, Borrowed Names for family & friends. You might take a look. And, Joy Acey invited me to take a second look at your fall workshop. Is there any room left? Do I have to be published in order to participate? I am interested, but Joy said that the entrants are limited. I’ll check back to see your answer. Thanks, David.
Good morning, Linda,
I haven’t read BORROWED NAMES so thank you for the tip. And I hope to see you at the workshop. I don’t know how many have applied yet but as far as I know there’s still room on the roster. I suspect that it might pay to apply early. You do not have to be published to participate. We’ll have a good mix of published and un- and everyone will learn from one another.
Thank you David. I’ll check on it later today!
Nice list, David! I just bought myself Mary Ann Hoberman’s FORGET-ME-NOTS: POEMS TO LEARN BY HEART and Deborah Ruddell’s delightful A WHIFF OF PINE, A HINT OF SKUNK. I’ve also been reading PFA, ATCGW, and the NG BOOK OF ANIMAL POETRY. Then I put Gail Carson Levine’s FORGIVE ME, I MEANT TO DO IT: FALSE APOLOGY POEMS and Prelutsky’s I’VE LOST MY HIPPOPOTAMUS on my Christmas list, so hopefully I’ll find them under the tree. I really want Pat Lewis’s IF YOU WERE A CHOCOLATE MUSTACHE, but it’s not available here yet and I’m afraid it won’t be. We’ll see. There are just so many on my wish list, but I’m holding back until I see the Cybils shortlist – then I’ll buy whatever is on it to fulfill my judging duties.
Grown-up books? Haven’t read one in a while as I’ve been immersed in kids’ poetry, but I’ve got several lined up.
Oh, and I was just talking about LIFE OF PI the other day while brainstorming story ideas. Such a unique book!
Greetings, Renee! Thanks for adding your list. I forgot to mention the National Geographic anthology of children’s animal poems that Pat Lewis edited so thanks for catching that. I’m sorry that my new picture book isn’t coming out until two weeks after Christmas. I mean, really! What’s up with that?
But people can pre-order, right? Where is that info?
Thank you, he grinned. Here are two links on Amazon.com, one for GOOSE LAKE (on Kindle) and one for the new picture book, A PERFECT HOME FOR A FAMILY.

I can’t wait to see this book! I love raccoons and am writing my own raccoon story as we speak. Are you allowed to give a sneak preview of the cover?
