Hi everyone,

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your tears wash out a Word of it.

The Pickled Finger wrote; and, having writ,
Realized: Red Wine had dulled its Wit,
Nor its sobriety could change a Line,
Nor all its tears wash out a Word of it.

  1. Just great, David. ABAA in two stanzas, indeed. If you were to continue the piece, would you then change the rhyme for two additional stanzas? Is there a name for the construction? If i ask any more questions I’ll have to send you a check for tutoring.

    • Gene, I confess that I didn’t mean to publish this yet. I was setting up for tomorrow and accidently clicked at the wrong time and published it all the way back to January 2, 2015. I didn’t even have a title yet. The first verse is from The Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam. It has a particular pattern to what is basically a ballad form with five iambic beats per line and a rhyme scheme of aaba. The second verse is my parody. I thought it would make a good New Year’s Day lament. Alas I blew it, and sober at that.
