Yesterday we enjoyed an 80-degree, blue-sky day. It was lovely to be outside although work was involved. The late season warmth also spelled doom for a few insects that emerged early when they could have slept in till spring. A young dragonfly landed beside me to finish drying. I hope it lives a few days and enjoys a few midges before that first frost takes it.
Same for a pretty little butterfly that flitted listlessly among the last of the blossoms. Finding a mate this late will be unlikely but I wished it well.
The prettiest thing I spotted was a late season mermaid. It was a rare find! At this point she’s scooped enough leaves to fill a dumpster, but look at that October 23 smile.
Sometimes you simply have to show them who’s boss!
