I wonder how many stories and poems have been written about dogs, cats, friends, stars . . .
I wonder how many of them expressed original visions of their subjects?
The more familiar and popular the subject, the harder it is to write something fresh and new about it.
I’m struggling with that problem right now. After four false starts I continue to fight against the temptation to say the usual thing in the usual way. I’ll stick with it until a good metaphor finally emerges from the swamp of overused expressions but it may take a while. That’s the challenge every writer faces.
