To video or not to video

Hi everyone,

This past week I’ve spent time recording myself in three 3-minute promotional videos, one each for NOW YOU SEE THEM, NOW YOU DON’T; A PLACE TO START A FAMILY; and CRAWLY SCHOOL FOR BUGS. I’ve intended to do this for months and wasted time searching in vain for the program I used quite a while ago when Sandy and I made a video of me reciting one of my poems, “Practice.” Jeff finally came to my rescue and determined that my program had gone out of existence and must have been dropped during an update. He installed VSDC Video Editor, which is free and easy to use.

Making promotional videos is hard work, at least for me. I forget to smile. I scratch my nose. You can hear my breathing. It’s awkward holding up a book. I fail to include an important point. The light makes my skin look creepy. Etc. But yesterday I finally got a decent take on the third book so now they’re in the file ready to use.

Next I need to set up a new DropBox account so my publishers can share the videos and we can talk about ways to use them. It’s a whole new world out there baby.

  1. I’m sure you’re great in your videos, David! Can hardly wait to see them! (And I know kids will love them, as well!) Happy Sunday to you and Sandy!

  2. Horse and buggy. Rubber tires. Stick transmission. Automatic windows and transmission. Cruise control. Air conditioning. Air bags. Self driving cars. The wonderful advances we have witnessed just in transportation. Let alone in communication and just our daily lives. We have truly lived a time of real miracles. Keeping up is daunting but wow what a ride. God Bless my friend.

    • And the changes keep coming, Don. Now we entertain ourselves talking to Alexa, a small round box on the table beside the sofa. My phone alerts me when someone comes to the door, shows me a picture of the person, and allows me to talk to that person — no matter where I am. What’s next, my friend?

  3. I’m looking forward to seeing these videos of yours, David! I’ve made a few simple videos in the past, but the past couple that I’ve done for my books have been easy, because all I needed to do was write the scripts and record my audio (which, as VO guy, wan’t difficult), then the publisher took care of putting the video itself together! If I have to do it all myself…it might take awhile. 😉

    • Thank you, Matt. I may be making these harder than they need to be. Just wanted to see what it was like to do them myself. It may be time to share what I have with the publicists involved and see what they make of them.
