A brief series of favorite poems and their histories, #5

Hi everyone,

Here’s #5 in the list of my favorite poems.

This poem originally appeared in my first collection of poems for young people, SOMEBODY CATCH MY HOMEWORK, published in 1993 by Wordsong/Boyds Mills Press. “My Book” has been widely distributed and anthologized. In 2004 it was chosen to be sandblasted into the sidewalk of a new Children’s Garden at the Burton Barr Public Library in Phoenix sponsored by the Phoenix Suns basketball team. I was flown to Phoenix to read the poem at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Arizona Attorney General introduced me. In 2013 in Pueblo, Colorado the poem was painted around a new bookmobile that served children in rural and underserved areas.

My Book

I did it!
I did it!
Come and look
At what I’ve done!
I read a book!

When someone wrote it
Long ago
For me to read,
How did he know
That this was the book
I’d take from the shelf
And lie on the floor
And read by myself?

I really read it!
Just like that!
Word by word,
From first to last!

I’m sleeping with
This book in bed,
This first FIRST book
I’ve ever read!
