Poetry Minute

Sounds of Rain

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased that U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt is featuring a poem of mine today on his blog, http://www.poetryminute.org/ . My thanks to Kenn.

The poem chosen is called “Ambassadors” and comes from SOUNDS OF RAIN, a collection I wrote based on a trip that Sandy and I took a few years ago up the Amazon River and beyond into the rain forest.

I may have posted the poem here at some point but perhaps you’ll not mind seeing it again. Thanks for checking it out. Comment if you like.

Cave DetectivesANNOUNCEMENT: CAVE DETECTIVES, my nonfiction book about the ice age cave discovered in Springfield, Missouri on 9/11, has just been released as an e-book. I’m delighted to have this book available again. It became a Junior Library Guild Selection when it was released in print in 2007. The cave contains the oldest known ice age fossils discovered so far on the North American continent. I hope you’ll check it out. Hi everyone,

I’m still away from my office but now and then I have a chance to get online for a while. I want to remind anyone who is considering my Highlights Foundation poetry workshop this fall (September 29 – October 2) to start the process of registering. Last year the event was filled by March and I hope to see that happen again for 2014.

Contact Jo Lloyd (jalloyd@highlightsfoundation.org ) for the details. Here’s the link to the workshop.http://www.highlightsfoundation.org/workshops/poetry-for-the-delight-of-it-2014/

My special guests this year include poetry editor Rebecca Davis and Skype appearances by Jane Yolen and U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt. I hope to see you there.

Next year’s workshop

Hi everyone,

The profile of next year’s poetry workshop at the Barn can now be found on the Highlights Foundation Workshop schedule.http://www.highlightsfoundation.org/workshops/poetry-for-the-delight-of-it-2014/. It is a work in progress and I want to quickly clarify a couple of things.

I am the only faculty member. Rebecca Davis, I’m delighted to say, is my special guest for one of the sessions. I have two guests who will ONLY appear via Skype. They are Kenn Nesbitt and Jane Yolen. So far Kenn’s picture and bio are up but Jane’s are not. That will all be corrected shortly.

Lastly, I have not finished the agenda for the 2014 event but hope to get back to it shortly. I’m calling it by the same title, POETRY FOR THE DELIGHT OF IT, because I can’t think of a title that I think represents my kind of workshop any better. For obvious reasons, some of the same general topics are presented and discussed each year, but they never come up quite the same way and every year we gain new insight from our shared conversations.

Three-time attenders — Cory Corrado, Joy Acey, and Jeanne Poland — may tell you, if you wish to ask them, that each year takes on its own character as a result of the group dynamics. No matter where I think I’m headed with a given topic, something new and energizing invariably comes up, quite often because of the poets in attendance.

If you have further questions, I’ll answer them or you can contact Jo Lloyd directly at jalloyd@highlightsfoundation.org .

As of today I know of seven people who have registered for 2014 or said they might. We’re almost halfway there and I’m excited and pleased!

Poetry Workshop 2014

Hi everyone,

I just discovered a sneak preview of my 2014 poetry workshop posted on Highlights Foundation Workshops at https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Highlights-Foundation/195104610506943. You may need to scroll down a page or two to find it.

I’m told that registrations are coming in now, which is good news for me. The sooner we fill the quota of 15 participants, the sooner the group can start getting acquainted and begin building anticipation for what we’ll accomplish when we get together at the Barn next year.

My two Skype guests will be Jane Yolen and current National Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt. I hope to announce plans soon about having a session on performance poetry too.

I’ve promised Jo Lloyd to get her an outline of next year’s workshop as soon as possible. I might stick with the same title: Poetry for the Delight of It. What do you think? Get in touch with Jo for further information. She’s at jalloyd@highlightsfoundation.org .
