An experience with AI

Hi everyone,

Until now I have remained out of the debates about the rapidly expanding uses of AI. Today I’ll share an experience I had with it last night that I think needs to be shared. Our son, JEFF, decided on a whim to ask Google’s AI, Gemini, to quote a poem by David L. Harrison. It did so immediately.

But I didn’t write the poem. I never would have written such a poem. Anyone anywhere who might try the same approach to find a poem by me would see, instead, a fabrication created by AI or at the least a poem written by another party and be misled.

Jeff sent a note back to Gemini and said the poem was not written by David L. Harrison. Gemini responded with an apology. It said, “You’re absolutely right I apologize for the oversight. It seems I accessed a poem that wasn’t by David L. Harrison. To rectify this, I recommend visiting his official website or exploring his published works. If you’d like, I can try to find a specific poem by him if you provide a title or theme.”

If I had received that response in the first place, no flags would have gone up. So why didn’t AI do that instead of sending a poem that was either written by someone else or by AI itself?

Curious now, Jeff sent a similar request to Gemini, asking for a sample of work written by a writer friend of his. Back came a sample of work. But his friend didn’t write it. Who did? Who knows?

There is a very loose and very large cannon among us now. I know that it has many fine applications and is only beginning to grow and insinuate itself into our daily lives like it will in the future. But we need to be quite careful about how we use it.

Off to record

Hi everyone,

At 8:30 this morning I’ll start a full day of recording the introductions for every guest column of Poetry from Daily Life that has appeared in Springfield News-Leader’s weekly poetry columns since they began in November 2023 as well as those scheduled to appear in upcoming weeks. BRIAN SHIPMAN now has forty-five recordings of the poets and advocates of poetry reading their contributions and will soon complete this phase for everyone who wishes to participate.

I’ll meet Brian at Shewmaker Communications Center on the Drury campus and we’ll record until I drop or we finish. If we don’t get them all done today, we’ll schedule for a second day. Brian will add my introductions to each speaker’s recording and post credits at the end.

We’re doing it! A few weeks from now we will introduce to the world a new resource, a free video library featuring more than fifty recorded columns from Poetry from Daily Life. I am more excited than I can express.

Greg Pincus coming to Poetry from Daily Life

Hi everyone,

I’ve known or known of GREG PINCUS for at least fifteen years. When my website was new and its creator, KATHY TEMEAN, informed me that I also needed a blog, Greg was extremely kind and helpful with advice based on his experience with running a successful blog of his own. Now I get to welcome him as a guest to my weekly column, Poetry from Daily Life. So welcome, Greg, and thank you!

Greg Pincus has written for TV and the movies, published novels and poetry. He also confides that he writes great shopping lists. A lot of his writing is inspired by patterns, sports, and food, all of which he loves. Be looking for his column this weekend. I’ll post the link to the online edition on Sunday morning.
