Taking a turn on “Poetry from Daily Life”

Hi everyone,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Brookings Register in South Dakota has started publishing “Poetry from Daily Life.” I recently sent out invitations to several papers so help me hope that others will join us too.

Starting this week, our Springfield newspaper is now delivered in the U.S. mail so we must wait for the mail carrier to read our morning news. We can get it earlier on the e-edition but SANDY and I are old school so we wait until we can hold the paper in our hands.

This change means that the Sunday paper comes on Saturday because it can’t be delivered on Sunday. So my poetry column will now come out on Saturday and I will start announcing the upcoming columnist on Friday instead of Saturday. So today is when I tell you that I’m writing this week’s column.

Tomorrow I’ll introduce myself in the same way that I introduce guest columnists. I live in Springfield, Missouri and write poems, stories, nonfiction, and books for classroom teachers. I write for all ages but most often for students in grades 3-5 and I like poetry best. Two recent books that I especially enjoyed working on are The Dirt Book (Holiday House, 2021) and Partner Poems and Word Ladders for Building Foundational Literacy Skills (Scholastic, 2022). A unique fact about me is that I once skinned a 5-foot Indian cobra and tanned its hide.

My title tomorrow is “Writing Couplets.” As soon as I receive the link to the article, I’ll post it so that readers beyond the area will have access to it. Thank you in advance for supporting “Poetry from Daily Life.”
